The Institute for Research on Labor and Employment (IRLE) Communications Specialist will work to increase the visibility of the IRLE and the Labor Studies academic program. Specifically, the Communications Specialist will engage the center's networks by producing timely and strategic content for the IRLE and Labor Studies website and multiple social and multimedia platforms. The specialist will collaborate with the IRLE Communications Director to develop messaging campaigns that advance the mission of the IRLE and coordinate other programmatic needs as needed.
General responsibilities include traditional and earned media management, original content creation, social media and web management and a full-range of communications-activities.
Specific responsibilities include:
building relationships with traditional/earned media and place stories, interviewing individuals for story development, writing and editing stories, captions, blogs, and tweets, adapting stories for distribution on social channels, social media and web management, producing regular content for IRLE's and the Labor Studies' social platforms, developing regular email content for numerous audiences, and providing communications staffing at a wide range of IRLE/Labor Studies events.
Will be required to work occasional evening and weekend hours as needed.

Qualifications for Position
Experience working with diverse communities or social justice organizations.
Demonstrated oral communication and interpersonal skills sufficient to convey information in a clear, concise way, synthesizing information and presenting it to others.
Graduation from college and at least two years of related experience in a field relevant to communications, public relations, marketing, or journalism; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Creative thinking and proven systematic organizational skills to work independently without supervision, determine workload priorities to complete work in a timely manner, and identify and resolve problems.
Strong visual eye.
Proven skill at working in a collective environment, including interpersonal skills to interact sensitively with colleagues, students, community members, and workers from diverse social, cultural, and educational backgrounds.
Demonstrated skill developing relationships with and pitching news stories to media.
Fearlessness in learning new software independently.
Experience using various social media platforms and knowledge of social media engagement strategies.
Graphic design and photography skills and audio/video/multimedia production.
Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, Wordpress, Buffer, and Constant Contact.
Proved experience using various social media platforms, knowledge of social media engagement strategies, and ability to design and execute robust social media plans.
Ability to take, organize, and edit professional photographs.
