SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Music or demonstrated successful teaching experience with choir and/or band.

  • Specific coursework in Curriculum and Instruction or Special Education, or Counselling Psychology is desirable.

  • Successful experience and or qualifications with counselling psychology would be an asset.

  • Successful teaching experience with at-risk youth, preferably in an alternate educational setting.

  • Generalist approach teaching English/Social Studies/Science/Math and other ministry or locally developed courses. Experience teaching or ability to teach choir and/or band would be preferred.

  • Successful experience with students with a variety of learning/behaviour issues (category Q, R and H) and other Special Education designations.

  • Ability to Case Manage (specifically IEPs, designations, and facilitation of the ICM process) students with complex social emotional/behavioural and academic needs.

  • Successful experience adapting or modifying curriculum based on individual student needs as outlined in the IEP.

  • Ability to relate and connect with at-risk youth in a non-judgmental, patient and enthusiastic manner.

  • Demonstrated ability and/or desire to create a flexible program for students with diverse social/emotional/academic needs.

  • Strong relationship and collaboration skills (school-based staff, district staff, parents, students, community partners). Liaise with cross-enrolled school (ie Summit Learning Centre).

  • Strong organizational skills.

  • Ability in using computers and a variety of technology tools for learning, including but not limited to, social networking, search techniques, software knowledge, Distributed Learning and online curriculum options.

  • Ability to implement a wide range of classroom management techniques.

  • Demonstrated competency in a variety of curriculum delivery techniques (self-paced, cooperative, project-based, integrated, instructional institute etc.).

  • Knowledge of a wide variety of support agencies for youth in the Mission community, including but not limited to MCFD (SW and CYMH), Fraser Health, Mission Community Services, Fraser House, Child and Youth Crisis Program, Xyolhemeylh and Lifetime Learning Centre Society.

  • Commitment to excellence in teaching and demonstrated teaching ability.

  • Ability to demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness to the needs and demands of the profession.

  • Ability to organize for instruction to maximize student potential.

  • Training and/or certification in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and Food Safe is desired.

  • Willingness to practice and promote cultural sensitivity and awareness.


    GENERAL DUTIES

  • Teach daily lessons (whole class and small group) in a variety of subjects at the middle and/or secondary levels.

  • The alternate setting provides instructions to students in a pod like structure when required. Therefore, the incumbent may assist all students with music instruction as necessary.

  • Design and implement a variety of assessment practices to measure and monitor student progress effectively.

  • Use instructional organizers, concepts, and strategies that actively engage all students in learning.

  • Encourage the use of IPad, IPod technology in the classroom.

  • Case Manage students.

  • Monitor attendance and progress for students within case load.

  • Call and chair IEP and Integrated Case Management (ICM) meetings as required by the Ministry of Education.

  • Host Family Intake Meetings for students within case load.

  • Create and implement IEPs/SLPs as required by the Ministry of Education.

  • Collaborate and communicate with parents/caregivers and community agencies on an as needed basis.

  • Provide opportunities for health and career education, life skills development, recreational activities and cultural awareness.

  • Assist with the development of student behaviour plans and safety plans.

  • Collaborate with staff on school based activities and programs.
