Senior Accountant - Design and Construction Accounting At Penn National Gaming, Inc.

Your daily responsibilities include

SUMMARY
The Senior Accountant, Construction Accounting, performs project cost accounting functions including reviewing of invoices, pay applications, and construction contracts; tracking of contract payments; managing/ensuring proper invoice approval process; creating journal entries for cost allocations; preparing job cost reports; working closely with D&C Project Managers to ensure valid job cost reports; and coordinating with other job cost accountants, staff accountants and accounts payable staff, contract administrators, and construction coordinators as needed to ensure an accurate work product. The position also has responsibility to prepare monthly account reconciliations and gather support data for sales tax audits; and may manage staff accountants and close project costs to fixed assets. The person must exercise effective communication skills, exhibit strong cost accounting acumen, function effectively working with team members located in different offices throughout the US, and offer suggestions and support for improving practices and processes within a dynamic environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The following and other duties to be assigned as necessary:

  • Set up and close out Design and Construction and related projects in project accounting software application.
  • Coordinate and educate properties on the process for D&C projects, the project approval process, and invoice processing.
  • Obtain and track budget approvals and transfers, maintain change log, review purchase orders for proper coding support and approvals and for budget availability, review invoices for proper coding and approvals.
  • Coordinate/manage accounting staff performing invoice processing, assisting with contract tracking and other functions.
  • Prepare journal entries for reclasses, and cost allocations such as capital interest and D&C payroll overhead allocations, accruals for work performed but not invoiced, and for invoiced but not paid; create JE’s to push out monthly costs to properties, track contracts and related costs.
  • Interact effectively with buyers, Accounts Payable team and Project Managers for new vendor set up, and for checks needing to be processed immediately.
  • Prepare reconciliations of project module balances to general ledger balances and other CIP related accounts, prepare or assist in preparing CIP roll forward, review accounts payable invoices for validity prior to payment, review contractor retainage balances for accuracy.
  • Compute cash payments made during the month with Project Managers and assist Project Managers to determine cash forecasts for remainder of year as necessary.
  • Close out projects and costs and trans to fixed assets and creating cost segregations as needed.
  • Prepare and update job cost and other project cost reports for Project Managers, Property Project Owners and Finance Leaders; also prepare other ad hoc reports and analysis as requested as VP Design and Construction as necessary.
  • Coordinate with properties for clarification of D&C projects, project approvals,
  • Attend weekly meetings with D&C Project Managers, construction coordinators, and others and participate proactively to obtain or provide information necessary to facilitate work.
  • Work collaboratively with D&C team, Buyers, properties, and other to achieve optimal efficiency, offering suggestions and implementing process improvements.
  • Proactively provide support for internal and external audit requests, sales/use tax audits, create reports and provide support for miscellaneous requests from other departments as required.
  • Participate in software application upgrades and implementations.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Management or equivalent preferred.
  • Construction cost accounting background and/or five years’ experience required.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Working knowledge and experience with a construction accounting application.
  • Strong Microsoft Excel and Word skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a high stress, fast paced environment managing multiple tasks, projects and personnel simultaneously with a positive, approachable demeanor. Must possess ability to prioritize conflicting duties for self and accounting department while maintaining timeline integrity for projects and tasks.
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines under pressure.
  • Self-starter who can work independently with minimal supervision/oversight by anticipating next steps.
  • Able to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats and present information appropriately based on the target audience.
  • Attentive to details with ability to translate into the “big” picture.
  • Regularly and proactively communicates work progress, concerns, and questions in an open and forthright manner.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read and interpret documents in English, such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to read and communicate verbally in English. Written communication skills in in English may also be required.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Employee must be able to qualify for licenses and permits required by federal, state and local regulations.
