National Geographic Accounting Intern - Summer 2020 At National Geographic

Job Description

JOB DESCRIPTION

The National Geographic Accounting Department is responsible for timely and accurate reporting to its partners, The Walt Disney Company (Disney) and National Geographic Society (NGS). Accounting closes the books on a monthly basis in accordance with US GAAP for all departments within National Geographic Partners. These departments include 3 cable networks – National Geographic Channel, Wild, and Mundo, National Geographic Magazine, books, expeditions, maps, etc. On a quarterly basis, Accounting reports to both partners, including preparing disclosures for Disney’s filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

A day in the life…

As a National Geographic Partners Accounting Intern, you will have the opportunity to learn about being an accountant as part of a Fortune 500 Company, Disney, but also experience accounting within a smaller environment, National Geographic Partners (NGP). This position will not only learn about NGP, but will also learn the policies and procedures of Disney (as NGP must comply with Disney as it is the majority and controlling partner.) Specific tasks for this Internship, include:

  • Assisting in improving the account reconciliation process as well as tracking of the account reconciliations.
  • Learn preparation of full year closing calendar, in accordance with the Disney Fiscal Calendar
  • Assist with and learn Disney minimum controls documentation and testing
  • Assist with preparing monthly journal entries
  • Assist with the quarter close process and completion of Disney deliverables, as they relate to the SEC filings
  • Assist the Credit and Collections and Accounts Payable Teams, as needed
  • Assist with the review and testing of the Programming Inventory Tracking Spreadsheet
  • Assist with systems implementations (e.g. SAP)
  • Other ad hoc projects and requests

Required Education:

  • Currently pursuing (or recently graduated within 6 months with) an undergraduate Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Economics, or other related major
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0

Additional Information

Internship Eligibility:

  • At the time of application, must be enrolled in an accredited college/university taking at least one class in the semester/quarter (spring/fall) prior to participation in the internship program OR must have graduated from a college/university within 6 months OR currently participating in a Disney College Program or Disney Professional Internship
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must not have completed one year of continual employment on a Disney internship or program
  • Must possess unrestricted work authorization
  • Program Dates: Interns must be fully available from May 2020 to August 2020.
  • Housing: Interns must provide their own housing for the duration of their internship program.
  • Transportation: Interns must have reliable transportation to get to and from work for the duration of their internship program.
