We're looking for an experienced executive assistant to join us in our mission to help kids stay curious. In this role you'll report to and work closely with our Director of People Operations, Michelle Tang, to help to support our team as we continue to grow. At Mystery.org, people operations includes three primary areas—Team Experience, HR and Recruiting—and you'll be involved in projects within all three of these. As an Executive Assistant, you would also be supporting a range of special projects for the executive team. Here is a little more context on each area:
Over time you'll likely have projects in each of those areas.
We're looking for someone who combines three key traits: excellent project management skills with a high attention to detail; someone who has a natural affinity for bringing people together, brings an energy and ensures that everyone has a great time; and someone who thinks in terms of systems and processes.
Day to Day
In this role, you'll be juggling multiple priorities simultaneously so the ideal person is someone that has the ability to exercise good judgment in a variety of situations and is hyper organized. We have a lot of great foundation and processes in place, so you'll help own these and figure out how we can make them better over time. These include coordinating interviews, creating a great office experience (snacks, anniversaries, birthdays, thinking about office details, etc.), overseeing facilities, planning company events (offsites, recruiting events, etc.), owning the onboarding process for new team members, and a range of special projects to support the Executive Team. One week you may be planning a three-day retreat for 30-50 people, figuring out the puzzles of everyone's travel and the event schedule, and thinking about all the little details that will affect the feel of the event. Another week you may be auditing our new-employee onboarding process to diagnose why we have missed a step a couple times, tweaking our process to address that, and identifying those small touches that ensure new team members with a fantastic first day at the company. You may be the emcee for our weekly Town Hall (Company All Hands Meeting), facilitating the discussion to keep everyone engaged and having a chance to jump in, and while keeping us to the agenda.
This is an opportunity to help fix science education for the next generation. We are headquartered in San Francisco and this position is based in our office.
We started Mystery.org to create better explanations for every question children have about the world. We began with the 150 most common science questions that children ask teachers. We call this collection Mystery Science. Last year, more than 4 million children used Mystery Science in 50% of U.S. elementary schools. In an industry that is plagued by long sales cycle and high barriers to entry, we've sold thousands schools without a single sales person. We're backed by a great group of investors including Y Combinator, Learn Capital, and Reach Capital.
We're now moving on to all the other questions children have that they'll never learn in school. In the last 18 months we received over 500,000 questions from children eager for better explanations of the world. Now we're creating video explanations for every question. You can think of this like a visual Wikipedia for kids.
Our goal is to create a generation of better thinkers. We think this is the most important problem to solve in the world today.
Meet The Team
On your first day at Mystery.org, you'll meet a team of people who are passionate about science and teaching, and who each love their respective crafts. Our co-founder, Doug Peltz, began by assembling the best science explainers in the world from the Exploratorium, Klutz, LePort Schools, Stanford, and The Field Museum. Our focus on people extends to every area of the company. We're building the team that we want to work with.
We are a product-driven company. The core of what we do is create an incredible product that our customers love. We test every science activity, observe every explanation with children, and talk with teachers constantly. We take our responsibility to envision the future of learning very seriously and we want to bring the best science education to every child in the world. This is an opportunity to join a startup and transform science education for the next generation of children.
