The Service Innovation team at Mackenzie Investments is accepting applications for the position of Innovation & Design Specialist. Reporting to the Director, Service Innovation, the successful candidate will be responsible for collaborating with partners across the organization to drive innovation and business results.
The Service Innovation team functions as an in-house consultancy that works across all stages of the innovation process – from opportunity finding to implementation – for both Mackenzie Investments and IG Wealth Management. The team uses three complementary methods of problem solving: human-centred design, continuous improvement, and data analytics. Like all members of the team, you will be expected to zoom out (think strategically, guide others to see the big picture) as well as zoom in (translate the strategy into implemented tactics).
The successful candidate will proactively level up the team and the organization’s ability to rapidly prototype and drive more successful service innovation through a ‘build-test-learn’ approach. They will facilitate workshops with stakeholders across business units, co-design creative solutions that span multiple channels (not just digital!), and bring recommendations to life with compelling storytelling. We are looking for candidates with hybrid skillsets – who demonstrate excellent design skills and data-driven decision making.

More specifically, this specialist will drive the following kinds of activity:

Opportunity Finding
  • Identify potential engagements where a build-test-learn approach could de-risk innovation efforts.
  • Contribute to project selection and help define focused problem statements, objectives, and team member roles. Develop the case for potential projects by highlighting opportunities, benefits, or risks of inaction.
  • Within projects, identify key opportunity areas through a combination of qualitative and quantitative factors.
Discovery, Solutioning & Testing
  • Develop and manage project plans for small to medium scoped service design projects, or for workstreams within larger and more complex innovation projects.
  • Contribute to design research (including observation and interviews), analysis and synthesis of insights.
  • Contribute to the design of journey maps, service blueprints and other artefacts to help project teams understand insights and prioritize potential interventions.
  • The bulk of your work will be to translate insights or opportunities into tangible solutions, and lead the use of prototyping and experience design activities, for example: prototyping at multiple fidelities (e.g. from paper-based to digital click-throughs); storyboarding; concept validation interviews; physical or digital ‘pretotyping’ or ‘Wizard of Oz’ testing; experience prototyping with environmental mockups and roleplay; A/B testing; or building Minimum Viable Products/Services.
  • This could include adapting proven prototyping and testing methodologies from digital-only contexts to an omni-channel environment.
  • Co-design future-state experiences and processes that deliver value for clients and our business - collaborating with internal stakeholders, financial advisors, investors as well as Service Design, Continuous Improvement, and Data Analytics specialists.
  • Plan experiments to gather data on prototypes that can inform design choices and business decisions.
  • Produce reports and artefacts that tell a compelling story of findings and recommendations, motivating stakeholders and decision makers to act.
Implementation & Optimization Support
  • Contribute to project implementations, including designing communication and training plans.
  • Help move a solution from smaller scale testing or experimentation to larger scale implementation, and contribute to data collection plans that will tell us if the implementation is delivering the intended change.
  • Ensure continual engagement of business partners, and help them develop build-test-learn capabilities over time.
What you bring to our multidisciplinary team:
  • 2-4 years of experience in project-intensive role(s) working within industries that are complex and regulated (financial services experience is definitely an asset, but not a requirement).
  • Demonstrated experience redesigning customer experiences and/or internal processes to deliver business and customer value.
  • Completion of a post-secondary degree or equivalent (fields such as Industrial Design, Interaction Design, Graphic Design, or Service Design considered an asset)
  • Proficiency with MS office
  • Working knowledge of InVision, Figma, Sketch, or Adobe Creative Suite considered an asset.
