Mechanical Engineer At Klohn Crippen Berger

Location: Vancouver, British Columbia

Job Description

An opportunity exists for Mechanical Engineers to join our integrated, multi-disciplinary design and construction management team to deliver cost effective, practical engineering design and construction solutions to our clients on a broad range of major infrastructure projects. We are looking to fill two positions, one for a mechanical engineer in our Hydro division, the second in our Resource division.

Duties will include:

  • working with diverse teams of discipline engineers, designers and drafters from conceptual design through preliminary and final design and engineering
  • acting as a technical resource within their project team(s)
  • reporting progress to our clients and to our lead engineers at regular intervals
  • being a member of site visit teams, gathering information as required to complement the related design activities
  • maintaining quality throughout a project, implementing improvements as required
  • developing client reports, specifications and drawings.
  • occasional travel within Canada and internationally


If you have a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering and have a minimum of 7 years’ experience, we want to hear from you.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • strong technical design and analytical skills
  • strong understanding of the forces and spatial interactions that occur in mechanical systems
  • ability to develop creative designs for unique engineering problems
  • experience and/or ability to perform field/construction services
  • P.Eng. registration or eligible for registration in B.C.
  • good computer skills, ideally including MSWord, Excel, Mathcad, and Solidworks
  • strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work effectively with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals
  • effective verbal and written communications skills in English, with demonstrated competent report writing skills


Position 1 – Hydro – Gates, Valves, Cranes and Turbines

Typical Projects:

Current project workload comprises a variety of project and client opportunities including:

  • Hydroelectric projects
  • Dam safety
  • Marine and port facilities
  • Work with cranes, moveable bridges, and locks
  • Conventional and custom mechanical designs and systems for large infrastructure projects
  • Design of pumping systems, piping, heating and ventilation systems for hydro and industrial clients


Typical Services:

  • Design of gates and stoplogs for hydroelectric projects
  • Design of upgrades and modifications to existing, and sometimes dated, equipment
  • Assisting clients in procurement of hydroelectric turbines and generators
  • Mechanical design from concept to final design
  • Preparation of design deliverables (drawings, specs, estimates, schedules, reports, etc.)
  • Site investigations and construction monitoring
  • Design and project management
  • Client/Owner liaison and relations


Position 2 – Resource Engineering - Tailings Delivery, Pumping and Piping

Typical Projects:

Current project workload comprises a variety of project and client opportunities including:

  • Slurry transport systems for domestic and international mining clients
  • Cyclone systems used for sand dam construction
  • Process design in coordination with electrical and civil disciplines
  • Pump stations and pipeline systems
  • Conventional and custom mechanical designs and systems for large infrastructure projects


Typical Services:

  • Tailings delivery and Industrial pipeline designs
  • Design of pumping systems, piping, heating and ventilation systems for hydro and industrial clients
  • Transient pressures analysis
  • Pipe stress analysis
  • Preparation of design deliverables (drawings, specs, estimates, schedules, reports, etc.)
  • Site investigations and construction monitoring
  • Design and project management
  • Client/Owner liaison and relations


Requirements of the position:

The successful candidate(s) must possess a valid Class 5 (or equivalent) driver’s license, will be required to work in the field, and will be expected to work on one or more of the following types of projects:

Hydro Facilities and Dam projects

  • Hydro projects with large reservoirs in wilderness areas

Oil Sands and Energy projects

  • For Oil Sands clients in the Fort McMurray area
  • Domestic and International mining projects

Pipeline projects (oil, bitumen, natural gas and mining slurries)

  • For energy clients
  • For mining clients with slurry/tailings pipelines

Mining projects

  • For all types of mining projects including base-metals, coal, iron ore, etc.
