Social Media Specialist At Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Location: Pasadena, California

Job Description

Overview:[
New ideas are all around us, but only a few will change the world. That’s our focus at JPL. We ask the biggest questions, then search the universe for answers—literally. We build upon ideas that have guided generations, then share our discoveries to inspire generations to come. If you’re driven to discover, create, and inspire something that lasts a lifetime and beyond, you’re ready for JPL.
Located in Pasadena, California, JPL has a casual, campus-like environment situated on 177 acres in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and offers a work environment unlike any other: we inspire passion, foster innovation, build collaboration, and reward excellence.

]Responsibilities:
JPL's Digital News and Media Section has an exciting opportunity for an experienced Social Media Specialist to join its award-winning team.
Reporting to the Supervisor of Digital and Social Media, this position will be responsible for creating engaging content on NASA-JPL space and technology projects for new and traditional media including social media posts, live streamed events, and multimedia products. In addition to being accurate, creative and engaging, these products must be user-friendly for a variety of platforms and audiences.

Day-to-day duties include writing long and short-format products; creating and posting content (text, photo, graphics and/or video) across social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Giphy, Tumblr, Reddit, etc., while engaging with the online audience to educate and enhance understanding of NASA-JPL missions and projects; arranging and escorting media/social media during events and visits, collaborating with others, both inside and outside of JPL, and coordinating effectively with NASA Headquarters.

Working on key projects and campaigns with only limited direction, the Social Media Specialist will:
  • Use creativity and copy-editing skills to ensure concise, accurate, interesting and appealing content tailored to individual platforms.
  • Examine data and analytics to enhance understanding of social channels and communities, measure engagement, prepare reports and provide strategic editorial recommendations.
  • Provide support to colleagues across JPL regarding social media content, strategy and best practices.
  • Represent the Digital News and Media Section as an effective member of multiple teams comprised of others in the field of communications, as well as scientists and engineers, in planning media and social media campaigns for various projects and missions.
Qualifications:
Typically requires a Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, science writing, multimedia or related discipline with a minimum of 6 years of related experience, or a Master's with 4 years of relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge in one or more of the following areas: writing; copy editing; developing, curating and executing a variety of content across social media and online platforms, including text, photo, graphics, and video.
  • Superior writing skills, with an ability to distill complex science and engineering topics into brief, concise, accurate, colorful and descriptive materials that are appealing and easily understood by general media and the public, while providing enough detail for dedicated science and technology journalists. Excellent copy-editing skills are also a must.
  • Track record in working in a very fast-paced environment, with proven ability to meet deadlines and handle breaking news and/or corporate communications, while juggling multiple projects and dealing with numerous people and teams.
  • Ability to develop and implement strategic media plans to increase awareness of NASA-JPL missions and projects
  • Familiarity with media and social media analytic tools to monitor trends and results, and the business sense to know which metrics matter.
  • Ability to oversee work and teams.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable industry and/or academic practices and standards in the field of journalism and communications.
  • Knowledge of audience development and how to successfully engage different audience segments.
  • In-depth experience in both traditional media and social media with strong knowledge and understanding of best practices.

Preferred qualifications:
  • A combination of right-brain creativity and innovative thinking, plus left-brain organization and focus.
  • In conjunction with the required skills, experience in event planning and/or creating and producing online multimedia products, video (including live streaming and 360), imagery, audio and graphics.
