Engineering Graduate Student At Jet Propulsion Laboratory

Location: Pasadena, California

Job Description

Overview

New ideas are all around us, but only a few will change the world. That’s our focus at JPL. We ask the biggest questions, then search the universe for answers—literally. We build upon ideas that have guided generations, then share our discoveries to inspire generations to come. Your mission—your opportunity—is to seek out the answers that bring us one step closer. If you’re driven to discover, create, and inspire something that lasts a lifetime and beyond, you’re ready for JPL.

Located in Pasadena, California, JPL has a campus-like environment situated on 177 acres in the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains and offers a work environment unlike any other: we inspire passion, foster innovation, build collaboration, and reward excellence.

The Communications Architectures and Research Section in the Communications, Tracking, and Radar Division has a heritage of significant achievements in the development of new technologies for space communications and science: modulation schemes, error-correcting codes, receivers, advanced signal processing, ground-based solar system radar, atomic clocks and other quantum technologies, and radio science. We develop and analyze new deep space telecommunications and networking architectures to support long-range planning for NASA's Deep Space Network and manage spectrum allocations. We develop new radio frequency and optical communications concepts that advance the state of the art and demonstrate them for infusion into operational ground and space systems of NASA missions and for DARPA and other agencies.

Responsibilities

You will be a summer student intern in the Telecommunications Architectures Group (332H) supporting the design, development, implementation and testing of algorithms to plan, schedule and/or route time-sensitive information in an agile spacecraft constellation using Delay Tolerant Network (DTN) protocol. Together with other engineers in our section, you will consider the viability of using current standardized protocols such as Schedule-Aware Bundle Routing, identify challenges when using them in and propose enhancements to mitigate their effect on expedient data delivery (e.g., Software Defined Networking with centralized routing agent). Additionally, you might be required to also assist in other active research topics in our group such as differential radar experiment and analysis, Doppler localization experiement and analysis, and GPS alternatives.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Must be currently enrolled at a 4 year accredited college or university pursuing a Masters, or PhD degree in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering, computer engineering or related discipline.
  • Must be able to work full-time (40hours/week) for 8-13 weeks over the summer.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA 3.0 out of 4.0.
  • Must have at least 1 semester or quarter remaining to complete degree.
  • Familiarity in one or more of the followings areas: Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, communication systems and networking, linear algebra, multi-variable calculus, optimization techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience with MS Office, and at least one of the following computation languages: Matlab, Python.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Prior internship experience in related engineering disciplines.
  • Strong analytical skills.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Team player and collaboration skills.
