The Communications Architectures and Research Section in the Communications, Tracking, and Radar Division has a heritage of significant achievements in the development of new technologies for space communications and science: modulation schemes, error-correcting codes, receivers, advanced signal processing, ground-based solar system radar, atomic clocks and other quantum technologies, and radio science. We develop and analyze new deep space telecommunications and networking architectures to support long-range planning for NASA's Deep Space Network and manage spectrum allocations. We develop new radio frequency and optical communications concepts that advance the state of the art and demonstrate them for infusion into operational ground and space systems of NASA missions and for DARPA and other agencies.

Responsibilities

You will be a summer student intern supporting the in-situ navigation research for the Telecommunications Architectures Group. You will work with other engineers to investigate advanced algorithms and experiment demonstrations of the recently introduced Joint Doppler Ranging (JDR) techniques for 3D positioning of balloons and helicopters in the atmospheres of Mars, Venus, and Titan. This study will also survey the availability of existing space flight radios that can support simultaneous Doppler and ranging for a space proximity link, and radios that only need minor modifications to perfrom the JDR operations. If time and resources allow, another objective is to investigate the feasibility of demonstrating the single-satellite Doppler localization method using the Doppler measurements between current Mars orbiters and landers/rovers.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:
  • Must be currently enrolled at a 4 year accredited college or university pursuing a Bachelors, Masters, or PhD degree in electrical engineering, aerospace engineering or related discipline.
  • Must be able to work full-time (40hours/week) for 8-13 weeks over the summer.
  • Must have a minimum cumulative GPA 3.0 out of 4.0.
  • Must have at least 1 semester or quarter remaining to complete degree.
  • Familiarity in one or more of the followings areas: GPS/GNSS systems, communication systems and network, linear algebra, multi-variable calculus, optimization techniques.
  • Knowledge and experience with MS Office, and at least one of the following computation languages: Matlab, Mathematica, Pythons, or IDL.
