Electronics Engineer II ( Instrument) At Jet Propulsion Laboratory

]Responsibilities:
Do you have a passion for space exploration and flight electronics? Are you a strategic team player and enjoy the challenge of mixed electronics development from design concept to implementation?

The Microdevices & Sensor Systems Section operates under the Instrument Division and is responsible for the development and delivery of sensors, instruments, instrument electronics, and flight software technologies needed by JPL/NASA to enable new terrestrial, astrophysics, and planetary in situ and remote science experiments and observations. The Section provides research and technology for science instrument as well as flight instrument engineering.

Within this Section, the Planetary Mass Spectrometer Group seeks a self-motivated individual to serve as an in-situ Instrument Electronic Engineer Level 2. You will work both independently and in a team environment and will report to the Group Supervisor.

Tasks Include but may not be limited to:
  • To be able to design, develop, document, implement, and verify analog and digital electronics for in-situ instruments from the breadboard throughout the flight implementation phase
  • Be responsible to design, develop, document, implement, and verify Electronic Ground Support Equipment (EGSE) including any control software to test an instrument electronics.
    • Develop Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) using LabVIEW, C/C++, Java, Python, or similar language to verify functionality and performance.
  • Apply broad knowledge in the fields of expertise to evaluate customer engineering requirements and devises approaches to meet requirements.
  • Participates as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) and presents results in component and subsystem design reviews as a significant contributor to designs.
  • Ensures that mechanical, thermal, and radiation constraints are fully incorporated into electronics designs
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Physics, Aeronautics or Aerospace Engineering and/or related technical disciplines with 3 years of related work experience; or Master’s degree in similar disciplines with 1 year of related work experience; or Ph.D. in similar disciplines.
  • The assigned tasks require experience and understanding in design practice, testing, and fabrication of mixed electronics (analog and digital) and EGSE.
    • Electrical schematic/drawing development, for EGSE, test fixtures, and cabling.
    • Experience/understanding of hardware/software interfaces
    • Experience/understanding of test procedures and test of digital functions.
    • Experience with standard lab test equipment, such as power supplies, oscilloscopes, and DMMs
  • Ability to read schematics, requirements, and Interface Control Documents (ICDs)
  • Experience with Verilog firmware development.
  • Experience developing or modeling signal processing chains.
  • Ability to present her/his work in peer and design cycle reviews
  • Keen interpersonal skills with demonstrated effectiveness in a team environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills.
  • Ability to multi-task independently with an established track record of meeting milestone schedules.
  • Strong interest infusing new approaches to verification and test development into legacy developments
  • Ability to capture customer requirements.
  • Basic understanding of system engineering and development process.
Preferred Skills:
  • Knowledge of optics and focal plane arrays or other visual sensors.
  • Thorough understanding of advanced modern test instrumentation and the interfaces and software used to control and monitor their functionality.
  • Advanced knowledge of applicable Laboratory policies and procedures, NASA policies and procedures, and government regulations.
  • Ability to work well with cross-functional teams, design engineers, line management, and project management.
  • Contract Technical Management experience.
