Position Profile

Position Profile

The Associate Director of IP Management works with the Senior IP Counsel to support and protect the Company’s interests in intellectual property, including acting as primary support for multiple product or technology families, providing advice and managing the IP portfolio for those areas. The role regularly interacts with the Technical Operations team and provides support for other departments and teams as needed. Working in collaboration with inside and outside counsel, the Senior IP Manager will advise on a variety of issues, including invention generation, patent prosecution, due diligence, transactions involving rights in intellectual property and trademarks. The ideal candidate for this position will have significant experience with relevant technologies and in advising business stakeholders on intellectual property issues at all levels of an organization.

Essential Functions

  • Manage patents/applications in the Company’s existing patent portfolio
  • Work closely with internal clients and outside counsel to identify, develop and defend new patentable intellectual property, including assisting in filing and prosecuting patent applications.
  • Attend internal meetings to keep up with developments and to generate patentable disclosures.
  • Conduct patent searching, assess payment of annuities, review the docket and prepare patent-related reports.
  • Provide IP support for transactions, including diligence and licensing activities.
  • Participate in freedom-to-operate, infringement and validity analyses, and counsel employees on intellectual property risks and opportunities.
  • Manage the Company’s trademark portfolio, including working closely with internal clients and outside counsel to secure new trademarks, and monitor protection of existing trademarks.
  • Conduct patent or corporate reporting/compliance and other organizational tasks such as preparing perfection certificates, powers of attorney, acquiring references, keeping internal websites updated and providing IP information to external clients.
  • Create and deliver training and other presentations to stakeholders and other members of the department.
  • Serve as part of matrixed teams involved in IP activities and collaborate effectively, find common ground, and build alignment with relevant stakeholders.
  • Keep informed of new laws, regulations, and industry trends affecting the organization.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong scientific/technical background (a graduate level is preferred) in: life sciences, chemistry, medical sciences, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering or medicine;
  • Minimum of eight (8) years of combined patent experience in-house or with a law firm, with some of those years in-house at a biotech or pharmaceutical company;
  • Significant knowledge of and experience advising clients on patent laws;
  • Demonstrated experience interpreting and drafting patent applications;
  • Demonstrated experience working in a matrixed business environment, managing multiple commitments while prioritizing conflicting demands, maintaining focus on corporate objectives and providing quality customer service;
  • Must be a strong collaborator and adept at communicating succinctly and persuasively with a diverse audience;
  • Must be self-motivated, proactive, strategic, and exhibit an ability and willingness to advance new ideas;
  • Capable of delivering difficult messages and providing guidance with poise, tact, and diplomacy;
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with little supervision;
  • Demonstrated disciplined and detail-oriented thought process involving collecting and analyzing applicable data and considering all relevant factors before making recommendations or decisions; and
  • Excellent judgment and is adept at recognizing when decisions may have a broad impact on the global organization..

Required/Preferred Education and Licenses

  • Master’s degree in a relevant scientific area.

Description of Physical Demands

  • Occasional mobility within office environment;
  • Routinely sitting for extended periods of time; and
  • Constantly operating a computer, printer, telephone, and other similar office machinery.

Description of Work Environment

  • Work indoors in normal office environment with little exposure to excessive noise, dust, fumes, vibrations and temperature changes;
  • Frequent computer use at workstation.
  • May move from one work location to another occasionally; and
  • Occasional travel.
