What it’s like working at CBC/Radio-Canada

CBC/Radio-Canada’s Digital Audio Products combines the latest in live audio, streaming and semi-interactive experiences to bring Canadians the music, stories, and news they want to hear. We use the latest technologies to build products and a platform that makes this complex process, easy to access at any time, anywhere. We are also part of Canada’s oldest and truest broadcasting company. We are trying new things. We are growing. As an entity of our own. As a voice for our country. As a team.

Digital is a part of our present and all of our future. CBC’s strategy is focused on becoming a digital-first organization that provides a digital platform for storytellers. Our mission is to engage our audience with stories they care about.

The opportunity

Our Agile Scrum team is seeking a new iOS Developer who wants to use Swift and modularized code with pods to enhance and reinvent our Radio, Music and Talk apps. This is a level of exposure and impact that few other roles provide. Our Digital Audio team has a built-in, dedicated audience, seeking information and entertainment on a national level.

Who you are

You are a developer with expertise on the iOS platform. You have a portfolio of links to apps you have developed. You are an active collaborator and want to work in a team that blends cutting edge and exciting with stable and robust.

What’s in it for you?

Cutting edge tech. CBC has more than 25 digital sites, all of which are mandated to reach Canadians online everywhere and every way, with a high emphasis on mobile devices. To achieve that goal, we’ve forged strong relationships with Google, Apple, and others to stay ahead of the curve. The work you do will positively impact the listening experience of millions of Canadians. You will:

  • Help the team develop a brand new listening experience and products that combine Radio, Music, Talk into one.
  • Help build and re-architect a backend ecosystem that combines content from a variety of sources to provide a seamless audio experience to our audience.
  • Work closely on design, problem solving and creating a solution that lives up to the concepts and the audience expectations.

Belonging. CBC/Radio-Canada is a Canadian institution. By joining our dynamic Digital Audio Products team, you will be exposed to the best of all worlds. Corporate. Public. Startup. You will be part of a team that embraces diversity and at its core, truly cares about the country and the world.

Career growth. CBC is fully invested in our people. Whatever it is you want to pursue whether it’s a new programming language or a technical solution; whether it’s part of a group working on special projects or a new initiative, we will provide you with the time, resources and championing that you need to keep your career here rewarding. Our team has worked on innovative projects including: applications on emerging technology platforms such as tv, watch, or car OS, conversational interfaces, creative approaches to analytics, research, and audience insights.

Why join us?

CBC/Radio-Canada reflects the Canadian identity and promotes democracy. We strive to represent the voices of the country and support social and economic innovation. Our values - collaboration, learning and, continuous improvement - embody who we are as a people-focused, digital-forward employer. We offer a rare-in-tech work-life balance with flexible schedules and an excellent benefits package. We want to ensure you are happy in and out of the office.

Collaboration. We follow lean startup principles and use an Agile approach. Our dedicated people managers work closely with every individual to ensure we are leveraging their strengths, championing their ideas and supporting their pursuit of new skills and career progression.

Learning. From simply buying a book or recommending a course to one-on-ones, our leadership team is focused on creating an atmosphere where people feel fulfilled. Our team members are given opportunities to learn and work cross-functionally across multiple projects.

What you bring:

  • The experience. You have 2+ years experience of Software or App development, or similar. You use reliable code and can build release branches. You can explain why you made certain choices and how you would improve the functionality using newer technology. You have experience with build processes, an understanding of continuous integration, source control systems, and the mobile development lifecycle including design, development and publishing to The App Store.
  • The knowledge. You develop in Swift and have some exposure to Objective-C. You are familiar with Apple Frameworks, have an understanding of MVC and MVVM design patterns and use CocoaPods to manage dependencies. You know what CI/CD stands for and have used FastLane to improve your release process.
  • The education. A Computer Science, Engineering degree or equivalent is preferred, but we know not everyone gains their app development skills this way.
  • The desire to learn. You are continuously researching and keeping up to date, have the ability to quickly pick up new technologies and respond to change by learning and adapting.
  • The communication skills. You know how to listen and relay empathy and understanding for diverse perspectives.
  • The confidence and the humility. Your powers of observation help you understand your audience and communicate with the right level of detail. You are open to the ideas of others.
  • The flexibility. You can adapt quickly, innovate solutions and embrace the new while accepting the ambiguous.
  • The Agile experience. You believe in the Agile methodology, but you are open to the real world twists and turns.
  • The extra knowledge. An understanding of accessibility standards and guidelines and digital Content Management Systems would be an asset.
