Database Administrator (DBA) Support At Cadre

Location: Ottawa, Ontario

Job Description

About the client
Our Client, the owner and operator of Canada's civil Air Navigation System (ANS), is always looking for innovative technologies and solutions to improve efficiency and keep their customers safe. Our client is currently seeking a Database Administrator (DBA) Support who will be responsible for the review of existing MS SQL 2005 databases and provide recommendations, implementations, configurations, maintenance, and performance optimizations of the critical SQL Server RDBMS systems, to ensure the availability and consistent performance of our operational applications.

The successful candidate will need to coordinate with development leads to understand the dependencies and restrictions associated with these MS SQL Server databases. The incumbent will be required to work from the client's Technical System Centre in Ottawa.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the planning and implementation for the transition of the current MS SQL 2005 database servers to MS SQL 2016 based on the client's configuration, maintenance philosophy, and availability requirements.
  • Develop and document a strategic plan to combine current databases into a single database server.
  • Develop a configuration and maintenance strategy for the database servers and processes, including monitoring of system health and performance, to ensure high levels of performance, 99.999% availability, and corporate security policies are met.
  • Apply data modeling techniques to ensure development and implementation support efforts meet integration and performance expectations
  • Independently analyze, solve, and correct issues in real time, providing problem resolution end-to-end.
  • Refine and automate regular processes, track issues, and document changes
  • Assist developers with complex query tuning and schema refinement.
  • Potentially provide support for release deployment activities after hours.
  • Share domain and technical expertise, providing technical mentorship and cross-training to other peers and team members.

Skills and Qualifications
  • 8+ years MS SQL Server Administration experience required
  • Experience with Performance Tuning and Optimization (PTO), using native monitoring and
  • troubleshooting tools
  • Experience with backups, restores and recovery modelsKnowledge of High Availability (HA) and Disaster Recovery (DR) options for SQL Server
  • Experience working with Windows server, including Active Directory
  • Excellent written and verbal communicationFlexible, team player, “get-it-done” personality
  • Ability to organize and plan work independently
  • Capability of working independently and collaboratively
  • Ability to work in a rapidly changing environment
  • MCTS, MCITP, and/or MVP certifications a plus
  • Responsible for the documentation of all of their work so as to pass on the information to the team once the contract has ended.
