Team Leader, Systems Engineering At BWX Technologies

Team Lead, Systems Engineering

We are recruiting for the position of, Team Lead, Systems Engineering at our Peterborough, Ontario location. This position will report to Systems Engineering Manager.

This position provides leadership for the design, development, and delivery of safety and non-safety related systems and equipment used for the remote control of fuel handling systems, specialized tooling and process plant systems in the nuclear industry.

At BWXT Nuclear Energy Canada you will work on technically challenging projects as part of the Fuel Handling and Engineered Solutions group. You will be responsible for the leadership of a team that participates in the design of equipment and systems for CANDU reactors. Projects will involve the design, development, test, and commissioning of equipment for automated fuelling machines, robotic systems, maintenance tooling, and Balance of Plant modifications for CANDU reactors and related systems.

Responsibilities include providing leadership to a team of Engineers and Technologists in the Systems Engineering department to achieve goals and objectives set for the team. This is a key position in the company as it interfaces between management and individual contributors.

Specific responsibilities and accountabilities include working cohesively with the Systems Engineer Manager while performing following activities:

  • Plan and monitor resources and activities in order to accomplish operational objectives including completion of projects, tasks, proposals and estimates.
  • Present and report on status, issues/solutions, improvements, resources needs for the allotted team.
  • Lead process change through process enhancement, and technology introduction to achieve world-class product development and product deployment.
  • Build customer relationships and ensure market alignment. This position requires frequent interaction with external customers, subcontractors, and cross-functional internal teams.
  • Take an active role and responsibility in leading/driving proposal development and review, including technical and product presentations to the customer.
  • Key success factors are engineering and product excellence, effective design activity management, task/milestone completion on-time/on-budget, producing defect free designs, meeting your metrics, motivating a diverse team, managing and achieving results through influencing and setting of expectations/actions.
  • Leading by example, assure compliance and adherence to processes, industry codes and standards, quality systems, policy, and contractual requirements.
  • Proactively identify project risks, analyze solutions, and take decisive action to resolve issues and communicate these to management.
  • Coaching and performance reviews for allotted individual contributors to achieve best in class results.
  • Provide technical direction/decisions and oversight of systems design activities including, technical review and approval of documentation and/or drawings, as applicable.
  • Provide assurance of health and safety associated with the execution of all projects and activities.
  • Short term travel may be required for the purpose of meeting with clients and stakeholders.


  • BS or MS in Engineering, Licensed by PEO.
  • Minimum 2 years experience in design and development, with proven success in a technical leadership role.
  • Minimum 7 years experience in Nuclear, Aerospace, Transportation, or other highly regulated and process based design.
  • Experience with a broad range of interdisciplinary activities: systems design, requirements development, traceability and management, interface design, process and component failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA), system integration and testing, verification and validation plans, reliability/availability/maintainability (RAM) and customer engineering change control (ECC) processes.
  • Exposure to a broad range of interdisciplinary departments: mechanical, I&C, software design and manufacturing.
  • Demonstrated ability in leading complex engineering projects over their complete EPC life cycles.
  • Significant experience with project schedule, working within budgets, financial metrics and other project management methodologies.


  • Experience with IBM DOORS.
  • Experience in the CANDU Nuclear Industry.
  • Familiarity with CSA Nuclear Codes and Standards.
  • Familarity with ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes and Standards.
