Mechanical Designer

We are looking for a Mechanical Designer for our Peterborough, ON location.

BWXT NEC Nuclear Service division is involved in the design, manufacture, development, testing and service of on-power refueling and reactor maintenance tooling sold around the world. Today, BWXT’s equipment is being used in most of the nuclear power plants in Canada. Role Summary/Purpose:

Participate in the development and drafting of designs for automated and semi-automated equipment.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Develop concept designs into detail drawings & bills of materials for equipment, sub-assemblies or product using CAD packages Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD.
  • Work in a multi-disciplined engineering environment with teams of Professional Engineers and Technologists.
  • Produce and update part, assembly, weldment, control dimension drawings, and layouts.
  • Selection of materials and vendor components (i.e. bearings, valves, fittings, supports).
  • Participate in design reviews and occasional customer review meetings, providing resource information and design input.
  • Liaise with customer design and operations personnel to gather site-specific design information.
  • Assist others on specific projects.
  • Occasional travel to customer site locations within Ontario.

Qualifications/Requirements:

Minimum 3 years of mechanical design experience including experience with majority of the following:

  • Demonstrated ability to design automation / robotic process systems or tooling, from sketches or concept models.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing practices and constraints.
  • Experience with 3D parametric CAD software, preferably with Autodesk Inventor.
  • Demonstrated problem solving skills and independent decision-making ability.
  • Possess working knowledge of fundamental drafting techniques and practice including GD&T.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal English communication skills, and work effectively with others.
  • Must be able to multitask and work with minimal supervision.

Desired Characteristics

  • Certified Engineering Technologist (CET) or greater qualification.
  • Membership in OACETT or other certifying organization.
  • Experience in a highly regulated environment (i.e. nuclear, aerospace or pharmaceutical industries).
  • Experience with national / international pressure vessel and pipe-work standards (i.e. ASME B31.1 and B31.3, ASME BPVC Section VIII Division 3), and prepared piping arrangement and isometric drawings, equipment lists, and line lists.
