We're a medium-sized law firm that operates a number of servers on remote VPS accounts running Linux (e.g., mail servers, web servers, file servers, databases, FTP servers, PBX for VoIP, etc.). We're seeking a part-time junior Linux administrator / LAMP developer to maintain these servers, send status reports, and build out new functionality as needed. Our office is located in Walnut Creek, California.
This job is 70% server maintenance, 20% writing status reports, and 10% exploring new features to develop. In short, you'll be primarily responsible for overseeing the servers and writing periodic status reports to the firm's managing partners. If there's a new feature we need, you'll also be responsible for either coding it, or hiring contractors who can code it (you would then oversee their development work). This means that experience in Linux and server maintenance is more important than coding skills alone.
During the interview, we will verify that you have some degree of working knowledge in GNU/Linux command-line tools. Please do not apply if you have no Linux experience, or are unfamiliar with the command-line. To be clear, we are not looking for basic IT support, or applicants who are primarily website designers. We are also not interested in applicants with only Windows experience.
For the first few weeks of work, you will be required to appear in person at our Walnut Creek offices for training. Afterward, you may work remotely.
The following skills are absolutely mandatory for consideration:
