Telecommunications / Electrical Engineer At Burns & McDonnell

Burns & McDonnell has an opportunity in our Transmission and Distribution (T&D) Group for a Staff Network, Integration and Automation Engineer, located in downtown Chicago. The ability to think outside the box and use critical thinking and problem solving skills is essential.

The ideal candidate should have a working knowledge with some or all of the following technical facets: Communication protocols such as IEC61850, DNP, Modbus, and SNMP, OPC, DDE and TCP/IP, fiber optic ISP/OSP installations and experience with SCADA and HMI (Human Machine Interface) software. Candidate should be knowledgeable in best practices for design of communication networks, automation systems, power management systems, RTU configuration and human-machine interface software for microprocessor based protection and control systems.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities Execute project designs, studies and documentation for Burns and McDonnell clients.

  • Project assignments may include:
  • Distribution Automation
  • HMI design
  • SCADA and RTU designs and configurations
  • Design of network communication architectures in substations and other industrial locations
  • Client site visits to collect data and analysis existing conditions
  • Configuration of network equipment such as switches, routers, etc
  • Design new and modify existing system drawings and documents including:
  • bills of materials,
  • construction specifications
  • network diagrams
  • electrical schematics
  • equipment wiring.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Key Attributes Excellent written and verbal communication skills are a must.

  • Dedication to task completion and a strong work ethic are essential.
  • Ability to communicate issues and identify solutions.
  • Provide leadership, guidance and instruction to less experienced staff members.
  • Occasionally meets and corresponds with clients or outside personnel and develop relationships with key client points of contact.
  • Effectively execute project work and deliver high quality work products.
  • Perform design quality reviews for projects of small to medium sizes.

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited program. Minimum 3 years related SCADA and network design experience, ideally with some exposure to substation utilities. This position requires an individual capable of applying intensive and diversified knowledge of principles and practices to broad areas of assignments. Must be capable of devising new approaches to problems encountered.

Previous consulting experience preferred. Professional Engineer registration in a US state or Canadian Province preferred.
