Assistant Controller At Building Material Distributors, Inc.

Location: Galt, California

Job Description

The Assistant Controller is responsible for organizing and directing the Company’s general accounting activities and the day-to-day transactions of the Accounting department in order to assure the accuracy of the Company’s financial results and Accounting’s work product and that the results comply with generally accepted accounting principles. This includes maintaining accounting systems to ensure the proper accounting and recording of Company resources, creating and posting journal entries to the general ledger, reviewing the general ledger, and preparing monthly financial statements and analysis. The Assistant Controller oversees the Accounting department’s productivity and accuracy through the management and supervision of the Accounting staff. This position works collaboratively with other departments to provide information and assistance in support of the Company’s goals and strategies. In the Controller’s absence, the Assistant Controller manages the Accounting department.

Essential Functions:

  • Work within the functions of the ASW system (distribution and financial program environments) in order to review information, extrapolate data and generate reports
  • Utilize the Business Intelligence software in order to extrapolate and analyze data and generate reports
  • Review the Company’s Fixed Assets, including monthly depreciation and annual Property Tax returns
  • Review the Company’s inventory activity, including monthly shrink, valuation reserves and duty entries
  • Review monthly and quarterly Sales tax returns prepared by staff
  • Lead and oversee the monthly closing of the General Ledger to Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet reports
  • Study and analyze financial reports and statements, identifying unusual activity or items exceeding budget
  • Review monthly account reconciliations
  • Coordinate all audits and communicate and correspond with external accountants and auditors
  • Review monthly bank reporting requirements prepared by staff
  • Review and approve monthly commission calculations and entry
  • Work with payroll staff to ensure accurate payroll accruals and account balances
  • Assist with the Company’s budgeting process
  • Monitor staff productivity and address issues of accuracy and timeliness of staff work product
  • Complete and administer performance reviews of staff
  • Verify employee attendance and manage other issues pertaining to payroll for staff
  • Train, develop and mentor staff and delegate to others as appropriate
  • Ensure accounting policies and procedures are current and documented for all accounting areas
  • Interact with and maintain regular communication in a cooperative and professional manner with management and other departments to improve Accounting’s and Company’s efficiencies
  • Work closely with other departments to provide requested information and support
  • Perform special projects, complex accounting analysis and other duties as requested by the Controller and/or CFO, including cross-training in the functions and duties of the Controller
