Senior Analyst, Liquidity and Funding Management At BMO Financial Group

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Job Description

Under the direction of the Director, Liquidity and Funding Management, this role is accountable for the measurement, analysis, and oversight of the Bank’s regulatory and internal liquidity and funding risks that arise from business activities performed by Lines of Businesses (LOBs) globally. The individual will partner with LOBs to develop a solid understanding of business strategies and develop in-depth product, market and regulatory knowledge across a large number of retail and trading products. This knowledge will help the incumbent provide guidance to businesses and senior management on liquidity and funding risk mitigation, product development, and optimization.

The Senior Analyst will provide support for enhancing the liquidity risk framework, including risk assessment, measurement, limit methodologies and development, report automation, and participation in cross-departmental projects, consistent with the bank's risk appetite framework, policies and regulatory requirements.

1. Business Delivery & Implementation (Strategy)

Develop strong relationships and collaborate with LOBs and other with cross-departmental teams on liquidity matters;

Assist in the development of liquidity strategy and collaborate with business units to develop business unit liquidity strategies;

Accountable for timely and accurate reporting liquidity and funding risks;

Ensure the Bank is in compliance with regulatory liquidity metrics and Board approved liquidity risk tolerances, including liquidity triggers;

Accountable for ensuring relevant parties are appropriately informed and provided with relevant and timely information to ensure compliance with regulatory and internal requirements;

Assist with the communication of liquidity matters to regulators and financial disclosures;

Assist subsidiaries in adhering to liquidity management standards;

Develop financial models to measure liquidity and funding risks;

Participate in the design and implementation of business processes to provide timely and accurate data and information for liquidity risk assessment;

2. Change & Innovation (Advisory)

Develop subject matter expertise on liquidity and funding matters, providing market expertise and advice to Finance, LOBs and other internal partners;

Maintain current knowledge of local and global regulatory changes in the capital markets and prepare briefing materials for senior executives on implications to the Bank

Demonstrate strong project management, time management and relationship management skills to lead cross-functional internal and external teams to deliver results within tight deadlines

Develop liquidity reporting and analytics to meet regulatory and internal management needs

Assist in the ongoing maintenance of, and changes to, existing models

Coordinate with LOBs and functional groups (e.g. T&O, Chief Accountant Group) in the Bank to develop and implement effective, efficient business processes to meet Treasury’s data and reporting requirements

3. Risk Management and Control (Governance)

Keep abreast of regulatory developments and interpret the impact on Liquidity and Funding risk management measurement practices

Ensure operating standards and processes covering liquidity and funding management are followed. Provide recommendations for corrective action or improvements, as necessary

Help develop and maintain models to ensure they appropriately capture the on-going impacts of liquidity and funding risks

Support the monitoring of liquidity and funding risks, including the risk mitigation provided by liquidity portfolios, to identify trends in assumptions and negative trends in relation to trigger events

4. Client & Relationship Management (Support)

Key relationship management role with LOBs, Enterprise Market Risk Management, Capital Markets, Corporate Treasury, Corporate Accounting Group, Technology, Legal, Compliance and Operations

Develop cross-functional skills to assist other team members achieve Corporate Treasury and Bank goals, ensuring knowledge and skill remain commensurate with the requirements of the position



  • 1-5 years of experience in a related field: Corporate Treasury, Capital Markets, Risk Management or Investment Banking; CFA, degree in Math or business; MBA Finance or equivalent preferred

  • Good quantitative skills with the ability to analyze, evaluate and form independent judgments

  • Knowledge of financial analysis and financial modeling

  • Knowledge of capital markets, market risk, and hedging strategies are an asset

  • Knowledge of various research tools, including Bloomberg

  • Ability to work on multiple projects with a high attention to detail

  • Ability to interact with and build relationships with people from different departments and levels of seniority

  • Self-starter with good commercial perspective

  • General knowledge of the Bank’s structure and accounting systems a positive


  • Excellent communication skills and delivers clear, effective communication (both verbal and written)

  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet timelines with a high attention to detail and without compromising the integrity of deliverables

  • Advanced financial modeling skills

  • Strong interpersonal & leadership skills with the ability to develop strong relationships

  • Strong aptitude for governance controls and documentation
