Manager, Web Development, Personalization At BMO Financial Group

Location: Toronto, Ontario

Job Description

BMO is a Canadian leader in Personalization. We’ve invested in the tools, the people, and the culture to become the best in delivering delightful, compelling, and personalized digital experiences. Our team includes Personalization Specialists (product owners), Content Strategists, UX and Visual designers, Web Developers, QA resources, MarTech specialists, and other digital experts). Our team is rapidly growing, and we are looking for passionate people to help us reach the next level!

Reporting to the ‘ Senior Manager, Personalization’, the ‘Manager, Web Development, Personalization’, is responsible for leading the team that develops personalized experiences and A/B tests on BMO’s digital properties (namely BMO.com and BMOHarris.com); architecting and integrating market-leading web technologies; and leading our DevOps practice (including standards, tools, and best practices). The overall objective for this role, and the result of their labour, is to facilitate revenue generation, loyalty, and customer satisfaction through leading the development of personalized experiences.

In order to be successful in this role, a candidate needs to:

  • Be an experienced, hands-on developer who has led a team of developers; and can establish a clear strategic vision and roadmap for the team
  • Be naturally at home with a range of web concepts, technologies, and methodologies (listed below)
  • Be able to work as part of a friendly and collaborative cross-discipline agile team; as well as work with Product Owners and stakeholders to support translation of business requirements into technical outcomes, and communicate technical solutions to non-technical partners
  • Be able to balance day-to-day workload for the team
  • Collaborate with, and influence, other technical teams in establishing the best technical solution and outcome for our customers and shareholders
  • Be proactive in finding ways to improve our practice
Leadership (50%)
  • Create and socialize team vision, strategy, and roadmap
  • Lead the team that develops personalized experiences and A/B tests on BMO’s digital properties (namely BMO.com and BMOHarris.com)
  • Provide coaching, guidance, and mentorship to team members in order to foster professional growth
  • Advocate, implement, and share best practices (ex: DevOps), lessons learned, and risk mitigation strategies
  • Work with Product Owners to support translation of business requirements into technical outcomes; and translate technical solutions to non-technical stakeholders
  • Collaborate on a cross-functional agile team of Personalization Specialists (product owners), Content Strategists, UX and Visual designers, Web Developers, QA, MarTech specialists, and other digital experts
  • Collaborate and align with our Digital DevOps team
  • Break down barriers through collaboration
  • Champion effective methods of knowledge sharing with the team and with technical partners, empowering them in leveraging Personalization and A/B Testing capabilities to drive business outcomes
  • Balance day-to-day workload for the team, and raise issues/blockers in a timely fashion
Development & Architecture (50%)
  • Responsible for the Software Development Life Cycle of Personalized Experiences including:
    Planning, Estimation, Development, Unit Testing, Bug Fixes, and Release Management
  • Ensure projects are delivered on-time, to the highest possible standard, and with sufficient documentation
  • Analyze debug, and deliver clean, validated, maintainable, and documented code
  • Ensure integrity and quality control
  • Occasional work outside of normal office hours for larger code deployments
  • Work closely with Technology & Operations, Digital DevOps & Agile teams, and outside vendors to collaborate on solution architecture, and end-to-end testing; at times needing to influence these partners in establishing the best technical solution and outcome for our customers and shareholders
  • Proactively identify opportunities for both technical and process improvements
  • Acquire end-to-end knowledge of BMO.com and our Marketing Technologies, becoming an internal subject-matter-expert

Qualifications

Professional Experience
  • A bachelors degree or college diploma computer science or another, related, technical discipline
  • 3+ years working experience in Web Development
Technical Knowledge
  • Must have/be
    • Experience translating business requirements in into technical outcomes; and technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders
    • Strong working experience with Kanban Boards, Jira/Rally, SVNs [GitHub/BitBucket], HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript, jQuery, React/Angular, Web APIs, and JSON
    • Experience with Web Developer tools (Firebug, Console, Network Inspector)
    • A strong understanding of web concepts (DOMs, HTML Elements and Attributes, iFrames, CSS Box Model, GET/POST requests, client-side/server-side cookies, query-string parameters, responsive vs. adaptive design, etc.)
    • Experience working with a CMS (WEM [OpenText], Adobe Experience Manager, Drupal, or similar)
    • Intermediate knowledge of client-side testing and best practices
    • Web Standards: W3C & WCAG 2.0
    • Software Development Life Cycles (SDLC): namely Agile and Waterfal
  • Experience with the following would be an Asset but not required
    • Python, Java, C, SQL, XML
    • Node.js
    • RESTful APIs and WebServices
    • MongoDB
    • Working experience with Marketing Technologies (Web Analytics tagging and platforms, A/B Testing Platforms, Google’s DoubleClick, Tag Managers, and Data Management Platforms)
