Job Description

As part of BlueRock Therapeutics vision to change the future of medicine by enabling ground-breaking cell therapies, the candidate will be an important technical contributor of a dynamic and progressive team responsible for ensuring that the company’s leading cell product candidates are delivered safely, accurately and healthy to provide benefit to patients. The position is responsible for producing cell materials for preclinical development and assessment, involving expansion of pluripotent stem cells and directed differentiation to target cell phenotypes. Duties include day-to-day maintenance of cell cultures, performing ongoing quality control testing and assessment of cells and working with leading scientists to translate cell technologies into clinical use. The resulting cell product will be evaluated in vitro and in vivo. The successful candidate has demonstrated excellent aseptic cell culture technique and attention to detail. Experience with handling larger cell cultures (>500 mL) is a plus. The ideal candidate is comfortable working in a cell culture laboratory environment, and sharing responsibilities with other laboratory team members to maintain cultures seven days a week.

The Toronto, Canada site is seeking a Research Associate to perform scaled cell manufacturing including pluripotent stem cell expansion and downstream directed differentiation into cell product for investigational use. The incumbent will be a key laboratory member in a dynamic and progressive team generating therapeutic candidate cell types from pluripotent stem cells. Hands on experience with mammalian cell culture processes is essential. Familiarity with scaled cell culture technologies and cGMP aseptic manufacturing requirements is a plus.

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBLITIES:

  • Execute campaign cell manufacturing of pluripotent stem cell-based expansion and differentiation processes in an R&D environment. Cultures typically require daily care, so weekend work is a basic requirement of the position. Work schedule will be flexible to accommodate.
  • Perform cell counting, flow cytometry, ELISA, analytical, cell-based, DNA-based and other assays as required to determine experimental outcomes.
  • Collect and analyze data in electronic laboratory notebooks from cell processes, various assays, then track and trend data, and establish specifications for process characterization and control.
  • Present scientific data to colleagues in group meetings, prepare and present internal and external presentations (presentations, posters, publications).
  • Author, review and approve SOPs, study protocols, reports and other scientific and quality documents.
  • Perform additional duties to support the safe and efficient operation of the laboratory, and other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelors or Masters in biological sciences or closely related field(s)
  • A minimum of two years of demonstrated experience with aseptic culture technique, maintaining mammalian cell lines and related laboratory experience
  • A proven ability to be highly productive and successful in a high pace work environment with excellent attention to details and meticulous bench work
  • Cooperating with a larger team, must be able to solve a wide range of complex problems in creative and practical ways
  • Self-motivated and willing to accept temporary responsibilities outside of initial job description
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Competency in computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

  • WORKING CONDITIONS:
    • Candidate will be working in office and controlled laboratory environments
    • Work may periodically require moving heavy equipment and the ability to lift ~50 pounds
    • There is a risk of potential exposure to chemicals and biohazards consistent with somatic cell therapy culture
    • Working in the laboratory requires mandatory use of personal protective equipment.
