MSSQL Database Administrator (DBA)

Reporting to Senior Manager Database Service, as a member of the Best Buy Canada IT database team the MSSQL Database Administrator will be responsible for supporting all Best Buy Canada MS SQL and Couchbase databases for all production and lower environments. This role will be a hands-on role and it is expected that this role will also be working with and providing guidance to 3rd party outsourced L1 and L2 DBA’s to maintain the database application infrastructure operations on a daily basis and work with IT Infrastructure team and application development team members to ensure production environments are highly available. The role will ensure all applicable incident, problem and change management (ITIL) processes are followed according to Best Buy Technology Group standards.
As a member of the DBA team monitoring and tuning the database environment for is one of the primary responsibilities the team is involved in. The DBA team will need to perform capacity planning to ensure all database environments have sufficient capacity to support current and future projects.
This role will continuously build his/her knowledge of the current database infrastructure as well as future and upcoming database technologies to provide progressive improvements and efficiencies to the database environment with which our Best Buy Canada applications operate on.
As a MSSQL Database Administrator, you will…
Implement and support MSSQL Server and Couchbase databases.
- Performing in-depth analysis of the highest level technical issues.
Act as a primary resource in successful completion of MSSQL and couchbase database upgrades and/or migrations.
Patch management – review technical notes for all critical patches released for MSSQL and couchbase database environments and sure MSSQL and couchbase database are up to date with the latest critical security patching and in compliance to Best Buy Enterprise Information Protection patching policy standards.
Maintain the multiple staging, testing, disaster recovery, and production database environments within the Best Buy Canada space. You will ensure that each patch is properly tested in lower environments when possible before being applied into production and that lower environments are continually ready to receive new code for project and break/fix testing purposes.
Must be part of the rotating “on call team,” providing support to critical production system support after hours.
Must be able to work weekdays, weekends, and holidays as required by system support and maintenance.
- Other duties as deemed appropriate.
- Work with developers to review and optimize SQL/stored procedure calls.
- You will work closely alongside the development and testing teams during design, execution and testing phases performing development and support ensuring any new database changes / enhancements in Best Buy Canada applications will be optimized for performance in the production environments.

Infrastructure Monitoring/Performance Tuning:
- Work with performance testing streams to identify potential application infrastructure bottlenecks and provide remediation plans as they relate to database.

The experience we need…
MSSQL database production support experience.
Bachelors or Diploma in Computer Science or similar.
5+ years of professional work experience within the IT infrastructure.
Direct experience implementing, managing, and performance tuning Microsoft SQL databases in a clustered and highly available environment.
Bachelor's Degree, Associate's Degree, or equivalent in Business, Operations, or Logistics, or equivalent experience.
ITIL, MCITP, etc.
