Data Scientist, Security Operation Center At Bell

The Bell Security Operations Center team is responsible for the continuous investigation of correlated security event feeds and the appropriate escalation in case of an identified security incident for Bell internal business units and external customers. They are the primary contact for any suspected security incident and work together with the remediation team on resolving incidents and remediating threats.


As a Security Data Scientist, your job will be focused on building advanced and innovative detection mechanisms for attacker techniques tactics and procedures (TTPs) using a variety of data science techniques such as supervised or unsupervised machine learning, anomaly detection, and clustering. Other activities include data exploration, model validation tuning, and training. You will be part of the Security Operation Center team and interact with experts, analyst and developers in an agile environment to enhance Bell security infrastructure and tools and contribute to the Canadian Cyber Security Strategy.


Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Determine appropriate places to implement statistical models to detect security threats
  • Conduct Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA), including acquiring, engineering, and exploring various data types and log sources for detection opportunities
  • Select features, building, training, and optimizing models using supervised or unsupervised machine learning, anomaly detection, clustering, or other techniques
  • Creating automated anomaly detection systems and working with security experts on continuous measurement of model performance
  • Contribute to data pipeline functions including data cleaning, ML pre-processing, and dimensionality reduction
  • Work cross functionally to define problem statements, collect data, develop machine learning models, and assess the model performance
  • Leverage state-of-the-art big data technologies such as Kafka, Spark, Hadoop, etc.

Qualifications:

  • University degree in an analytical field (e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Operations Research, Management Science)
  • Excellent understanding of statistical analysis algorithms, including supervised and unsupervised machine learning, anomaly detection, clustering, etc.
  • Good applied statistics skills, such as distributions, regression, etc.
  • Experience with one or more programming language such as Python, R, Scala/Java, etc.
  • Experience with query languages such as SQL, Pig, NoSQL, and GraphQL
  • Experience with data engineering, including data cleaning and normalization, building feature vector pipelines, etc
  • Experience with extracting and manipulating large datasets using Spark, SQL, or Pig.
  • Familiarity with big data technologies such as Hadoop, Kafka, Spark, Oozie, etc is an asset
  • Experience with packages such as NumPy, SciPy, pandas, scikit-learn, dplyr, ggplot2 is an asset
  • Experience with ELK (Elastic search, Logstash, Kibana), Docker, and OpenShift is an asset
  • Experience in large scale software development is an asset
  • Network security knowledge or experience is an asset
  • A candidate with a strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills (a good sense of humour is a bonus)
  • Bilingual (French/English) is an asset
