The British Columbia Investment Management Corporation (BCI) is currently seeking a Credit & Counterparty Risk co-op/intern for the Winter 2019 (January-April) work term to support in the development of the credit risk measurement and reporting process.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

BCI manages a globally diversified portfolio of assets valued at over $145 billion and is one of Canada’s largest institutional investors. We invest globally to support pension funds and others for more than 30 clients based in British Columbia.

The Credit & Counterparty Risk co-op/intern will work within our Investment Strategy & Risk department. This is a great opportunity for you to gain a broad understanding of credit risk management techniques and put in practice the finance and economics concepts taught at university.

WHO YOU WILL WORK WITH

You will work with the Credit and Counterparty Risk team within the Investment Strategy & Risk department. The Investment Strategy & Risk (ISR) department plays a key role in BCI’s long-term investment strategy by influencing and advising on investment decisions made by clients, management and asset classes.

ISR consists of two branches: Investment Strategy and Investment Risk. Investment Risk includes the maintenance of systems for monitoring, measuring and estimating various forms of relevant investment risks across the various asset classes that BCI currently invests or may invest in and aggregating that risk at a total fund level.

Investment Strategy includes the maintenance of a framework for understanding and estimating variable risk premiums over relevant time periods, research of relevant macro-economic issues including assessment of the current business cycle dynamics and research of emerging economic or financial trends, opportunities and risks, all at an asset class and total fund level.

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING

  • Work under the supervision of the Director, Credit & Counterparty Risk, to assist with various projects
  • Gathering, and organizing data from various sources
  • Performing fundamental credit analysis for corporates
  • Take part in developing credit risk reporting templates
  • Participate in documenting procedures
  • Providing support in preparing periodic credit risk reports
  • Ad-hoc projects in VBA and/or Matlab

THE IDEAL STUDENT

  • Has a passion for financial risk management in general, and the credit risk management in particular
  • Can identify key risk factors for public and private companies within various business sectors
  • Has a firm understanding of financial statements and public company documents
  • Enrolled in a graduate studies program
  • B+ equivalent cumulative GPA with an A- or better in Finance courses
  • Has relevant prior co-op experience at a bank or investment firm
  • Familiarity with Matlab, Bloomberg, CapitalQ is preferred
  • CFA, FRM, or PRM designation preferred

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • University-level knowledge of related courses (e.g. finance, accounting, economics, statistics, etc.) is required
  • A fundamental knowledge of basic business and investment related disciplines is essential
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Exhibit a high level of professionalism and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Strong relationship-building ability, proactive, results oriented, and resourceful
  • Ability to meet deadlines without compromising accuracy, excellent product quality and attention to detail
  • Has a passion for investment management, a dedication to hard work, commitment to the highest ethical standards, and an eagerness to learn
  • Analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Sound working knowledge of Excel & VBA

THE DETAILS

  • Work term: Winter 2019 (January-April)
  • Department: Investment Strategy & Risk
  • Office Location: 750 Pandora Street, Victoria, BC, Canada
  • Spend your off hours exploring beautiful Victoria and Vancouver Island
  • Pay: $3,600 per month for students with undergraduate degree; $3,800 per month for those with graduate degree
  • Travel: If coming to Victoria for this work term, BCI will pay return airfare or ferry based on your location
