Environmental Permitting and Compliance Engineer or Scientist - Entry Level At Barr Engineering

Location: Calgary, Alberta

Job Description

The person selected for this position will work on an environmental consulting projects in support of industrial clients, and require strong problem-solving and communication skills to develop solutions that meet client objectives for regulatory requirements. Projects may include compliance assistance, onsite staff assistance, site evaluations and investigations, regulatory and technical analysis, and report writing. The person selected for this position will also interface with internal project teams, industry representatives, and regulatory staff. Key job activities may include mass balance calculations, emission inventories, evaluation and troubleshooting of new or existing environmental monitoring systems, and regulatory assistance. The work may require out-of-town assignments in the field, at a client facility, or at another Barr office.

NOTE: Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, high temperature and pressure process equipment, and other conditions typical of large industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials.


Minimum Qualifications

  • BS in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, chemistry, or a related scientific degree.
  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively with project team members and clients.
  • Strong technical and problem solving skills, including attention to detail, accuracy, and completeness.
  • Strong computer skills, including MS Excel, Word, and Outlook.
  • Ability to effectively build working relationships, work in multi-disciplined project teams, and influence outcomes in a group setting.
  • A flexible working style and willingness to occasionally modify personal schedules to meet project deadlines and client needs.
  • Initiative and self-motivation with an emphasis on client service and growing a career in environmental consulting.
  • Willingness to travel for field work or work at client sites 70% of the time or more depending on client needs.
  • Acceptable driving record.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Post-graduate professional experience.
  • Post-graduate professional experience.
  • High level of proficiency working with Excel spreadsheets and data systems, such as Plant Information (Pi) and ASPEN InfoPlus.
  • Experience with environmental (air and water) monitoring instrumentation use and trouble shooting.
  • Experience working with regulations and environmental permitting.
  • Project or task management skills.
  • Strong leadership skills and experience.
  • Aptitude for developing client relationships and business.
  • Fundamentals of Engineering certification and interest in pursuing a professional engineer license.
