The Barbra Schlifer Commemorative Clinic (BSCC) is a Toronto-based charitable organization that assists women from underserved communities who are experiencing violence or its aftermath. Through services such as legal representation, professional counselling and multilingual interpretation, BSCC helps women experience less isolation, more stability and expanded personal agency within relationships, while also fostering improved knowledge of and access to legal rights and remedies. In its policy and law reform work, BSCC is a strategic advocate for sustainable policy shifts to address violence against women and social changes that benefit women. BSCC uses the umbrella term “women”, recognizing that gender is self-identification that is not necessarily correspondent with assigned sex at birth. “Women” represents all those who self-identify as a woman, including but not limited to cisgender women, transgender women, intersex women and two-spirit women.
BSCC’s vision is a world where diverse women build lives free from violence, work together to create a more just world, and live their own lives in respectful communities that provide meaning and belonging. BSCC was established in memory of Barbra Teena Schlifer, an idealistic young lawyer whose life was cut short by violence on the night of her call to the Bar of Ontario on April 11, 1980. Since it was founded in 1985, BSCC has assisted more than 67,000 women to build lives free from violence. In 2018 alone, BSCC provided vital resources to 7,000 women in need of its support.
Today, at an exciting time of growth, the Board wishes to recruit a strategic and visionary leader as the organization’s next Executive Director. The Executive Director will report to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the strategic leadership, team development and successful management of the organization. The ideal candidate will draw upon their 7+ years of progressive leadership experience and in-depth knowledge of the non-profit sector, including the violence against women sector and the legal system, to help strengthen the organization and increase its impact.
The new Executive Director will be a collaborative, values-based leader who would thrive in a feminist, anti-oppressive and trauma-informed work environment. Inspired by and attuned to BSCC’s mission (to amplify women’s voices and cultivate their skills and resilience), the preferred candidate will build rapport quickly and establish strong and productive relationships within the community and with staff, the Board, government representatives, funders and the women BSCC serves. This position is based in downtown Toronto.
