The Athabasca Tribal Council (ATC) is a key support to First Nations of the Athabasca region. The ATC Director of Education plays a critical role in ensuring ATC to fulfill this role. As such, the Director of Education is responsible for providing strategic advice, advocacy, support for in-community program and service delivery and assessments, for managing in-house educational programs and services, adherence to department budgets, relationship management with stakeholders, and for leading the Department's team management efforts. This position reports directly to the Athabasca Tribal Council's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and has one staff member reporting to it.
Strategy Design and Implementation:
The Director of Education provides strategic advice to the ATC Board of Directors and CEO with focus on all matters related to current and future opportunities, changes and challenges related to First Nation education. This includes developing strategies, position papers and identifying best-in-class education systems and methods and providing subject-matter support at assigned meetings.
This position is responsible for designing and implementing advocacy strategies focused on improving educational systems and practices for First Nation students in the Region including but not exclusive to Indigenous learning programs and materials, special needs requirements, addressing systemic and behavioral racial biases in the educational systems and securing funding required to meet program and services needs identified at the strategic and department levels within ATC,
Providing In-Community Support:
The position works closely with and supports on reserve and/or First Nation-operated schools by evaluating and supporting the delivery of educational curriculums that focus on Indigenous culture in the region, which meet or exceed current Provincial curriculum standards, being a conduit among on reserve and/or First Nation-operated schools, and providing council as required.
ATC Program & Service Delivery:
The Education Director oversees the effective delivery and evaluation of programs and services offered by governments through ATC with emphasis on ensuring they meet the current needs of our students and ensures required program reports are completed as per requirements and within set deadlines.
The incumbent works closely with other ATC Directors to ensure non-duplication of services; to share information that can result in shared programming opportunities, and to identify cross-department issues and ideas.
Stakeholder Relationship Management:
This position ensures that the necessary relationships are formed and cultivated for the sole aim of advancing the quality of and opportunities for improving education opportunities for First Nation students. Key Stakeholders include but are not limited to Elders and Knowledge Keepers, First Nation administration staff, principals and teachers in the various school boards, Treaty 8 and municipal, provincial and federal government agencies. The Director serves on various committees and task forces ensuring alignment with ATC communications and strategic direction.
The Education Director develops and manages the Education Department, setting goals and objectives that are congruent with ATC's strategic plan; providing effective leadership and direction to assigned staff and is responsible for the recruitment, promotion, evaluation, training and development, and performance management of staff within the scope defined by ATC policies.
The Director of Education has a Bachelor of Education Degree plus 8 years of progressive management experience in a related field or a Master of Education and 6 years of experience. A minimum of 3 years of experience at a senior level is also required. An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may also be considered.
