Director - Geriatrics and Continuing Care At Alberta Health Services

Location: Medicine Hat, Alberta

Job Description

The Director, Geriatrics and Continuing Care will work collaboratively with program staff and leadership in the planning, delivery, implementation and evaluation of direct services to patients in assigned inpatient units and residents in continuing care settings. Establishes and maintains strategic partnerships with key local and provincial stakeholders to provide operational and program leadership, oversee all related programs, services and delivery of client/family centred care. Regardless of the location of AHS operated continuing care capacity, the Director Geriatrics and Continuing Care will provide program leadership and expert counsel pertaining to service design, clinical and operational standards, audit support and special projects for all AHS operated continuing care beds in the South Zone. The position also provides operational leadership to specific Seniors Health service areas/units including specialty geriatric inpatient units and supports in the zone’s two regional hospitals as well as three rural health centres (subject to change through the organizational design project currently underway). This position establishes and maintains strategic partnerships with key local and provincial representatives and health care stakeholders, including government departments and officials in order to provide operational and program leadership, oversee all related programs and services and delivery of client/family centred programs and services.

Required Qualifications:

A minimum of post-secondary education in a health profession. Progressive leadership experience in a healthcare environment, including a minimum of five years’ experience in a management role in clinical services or health care operations for the assigned program(s), in an organization of significant size, complexity, and diversity. Able to demonstrate a clear pattern of professional and personal development. Demonstrated record of achievement as a manager, including extensive experience in improvement and innovation of services provided in a diverse clinical setting. Practical experience in strategy, policy development, project and program management. Experience in collaborating with physicians and other healthcare professionals.


Additional Required Qualifications:

Able to demonstrate strategic thinking, taking into account long-term goals assessing options and implications. Demonstrated ability to manage change and create innovative solutions for complex and diverse issues. Ability to manage diverse human, financial and physical resources within a complex environment. Strong organizational skills, client-focused orientation and commitment to providing long-term quality services. Leadership skills, including effective communication skills, demonstrated ability and comfort with decision-making responsibilities, coaching and teaching, and the ability to inspire and build confidence in others. Proven ability to foster partnerships and to achieve organizational goals within a large, diverse organization and managing within a unionized sector. Ability to foster a climate of cooperation among, and build solid relationships with, public agencies, government, boards, committees and other partners.


Preferred Qualifications:

Related bachelor’s or master’s graduate degree preferred. Clinical contract management experience is an asset.
