Job Description

As an Assistant Head Nurse, you will be responsible for staff assignments, patient flow and acting as a role model, clinical resource and advocate for nursing staff. In addition to providing frontline nursing care, as required, you will take a leadership role in the promotion of quality patient care and the implementation of operational priorities. Your in-depth knowledge and skills, advanced judgment and clinical experience, will assist in providing solutions for complex health care issues at all levels with patients, interprofessional teams, administrators and policy makers. You will play a key role in providing safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS.

Required Qualifications:

Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College and Association of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CARNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).

Additional Required Qualifications:

Ability to complete all SCR training modules & pass the certification examination required. Minimum 5 years progressive & related experience. Minimum 2 years’ leadership experience. Clinical chart review and abstraction experience required. Ability to build relationships and gain alignment for clinical support & be able to articulate questions to receive appropriate level of support from local & provincial surgical leadership. Equally comfortable working and communicating with physicians (surgeons), managers, nurses, clerical & executives (VP’s, ED’s, Directors), delivering difficult messages & working toward collaborative resolution. Computer and Internet experience required - familiarity & comfort with MS Office products essential for success in this position (Word & Excel required; PowerPoint & Access). Analytical and problem solving skill required. Requires in-depth knowledge related to process, change & relationship management services.

Preferred Qualifications:

Degree in health care profession or related field. Database entry and/or management experience. Quality improvement or patient safety knowledge/experience. Knowledge/application of systems thinking, change management and leadership strategies. Knowledge of site surgical services environment & clinical business processes.
