Job Summary

The Senior HR Advisor will be a trusted business partner and collaborative advisor on all things people related. The incumbent will join a team of talented Senior HR Advisors who provide proactive, practical and valued HR counsel through partnership with AFL leaders; ensuring alignment with corporate culture and business initiatives. In addition, the incumbent will lead a centre of expertise focused on the effective facilitation and resolution of employee relations matters in complex and fast-paced environment.

Specific Responsibilities and Resulting Outcomes:

  • Work closely with leaders to understand and translate the business strategies into actionable HR strategies; particularly in the areas of employee relations and engagement
  • Deliver HR services and provide expertise to clients resulting in a seamless point of contact and ensuring successful integration of corporate HR initiatives. This includes but is not limited to employment law, compliance, disability management, employee relations, benefits administration, employee engagement, employment equity, performance management and talent development, conflict resolution, learning and development and HR metrics
  • From a people and change management perspective, provide leadership in the areas of team coaching, organizational effectiveness, change readiness and internal communication strategies

  • Drive programs and processes that facilitate change and optimize the contributions and engagement level of employees; which may include leading focus groups and other employee feedback mechanisms.
  • While embedded in the business unit, the incumbent will leverage the deep subject matter expertise from within the broader HR team to collaboratively provide high-quality HR solutions to our ever-evolving business
  • Serve as a link between senior leadership, management and employees by managing inquiries in a timely manner
  • Build productive and collaborative relationships with all levels of the organization
  • Conduct workplace investigations/research which may include facilitating interviews/ meetings, drafting letters and performance improvement plans
  • Introduce best practice related to progressive discipline measures
  • Support people managers and employees in preparation for difficult conversations
  • Understanding feedback/performance management, and navigating challenge
  • Proactively identify and address issues that impact morale, effectiveness, turnover, absenteeism, and productivity and implement early intervention strategies
  • Assess sensitive and complex situations, advising in the progression of such cases and escalate concerns in relation to business risk to the Senior Manager and/or Director of HR as required
  • Ensure legal and statutory compliance with all regulatory bodies including the Canada Labour Code, Employment Standards Act and Human Rights, workers compensation, Human Resources and Skills Development Canada;
  • Responsible for research, administration, and distribution of Employee Relations documents including employee escalations and preparation for legal proceedings
  • Remain current on employment law, legislative change, court decisions and other major events/matters with potential employer impacts
  • Utilize data from HR metrics and analytics to identify and assess trends, and proactively diagnose and address areas of need
  • Analyze and assist with developing, designing, implementing, and evaluating various learning and development initiatives and programs
  • Establish strong relationships by delivering quality and timely service; identifying design and process inefficiencies and bringing a continuous improvement mindset
  • Assist Senior HR Manager and Director HR with strategy, workplace culture initiatives, research and proposals
  • Recommend policy changes to the Senior Manager of HR / Director of Human Resources
  • Support the HR functional teams and centres of expertise in the planning, implementing, and rolling-out programs, projects, and initiatives
  • Provide mentorships and coaching to junior members of the HR team with a view to sharing knowledge and developing capacity within the team

Qualifications / Skills and Abilities:

  • Degree/Diploma in Business Administration, with an emphasis on Employee/Industrial Relations, Human Resources Management, other related fields
  • CPHR designation a definite asset
  • 8+ years of experience in an Employee/Industrial Relations or Human Resources Generalist role with experience supporting a diverse workforce;
  • Interpersonal Skills - Demonstrated strong facilitation, negotiation, and presentation skills as well as the ability to collaborate on projects and maintain effective relationships
  • Results Focus – Driven to achieve under pressure; balancing high-quality service with strong business acumen and decision making
  • Analytical thinking – capable of complex reasoning analysis through the development, implementation, and interpretation of policies, procedures, and processes and evaluating their effectiveness
  • Leadership - Plan, organize, and manage multiple projects and tasks simultaneously in a fast-paced environment
  • Flexiblility – open to change; rapidly adapting to new information, changing conditions or unexpected obstacles.
