Financial Controller At Aequilibrium Software Inc.

Location: Vancouver, British Columbia

Job Description

We are seeking a Controller to lead the Accounting and Finance functions at Aequilibrium. You shine in analytics, metrics, resourcing and cost optimization, as well as detail orientation and 100% accuracy. By the same token you are great with people. You can work with individuals at all levels of our organization. You are comfortable developing and maintaining policies and programs based on business need, supporting the business in functioning optimally. With your expertise in accounting and finance your perspective is a key one at the strategic decision-making table of the organization. You will analyze and forecast financial, costing and other data to provide accurate and timely information for strategic and operational decisions.

In this role you are not afraid to roll up your sleeves and do the accounting and finance work yourself to start. This will include posting of journal entries, accounts reconciliation, invoicing, cheque processing and regular payroll for 50 employees. You will design an accounting and finance policy, procedure and reporting for today and toward our future growth plans. You may prepare quarterly and year-end financial statements. You will also be tasked with designing multiple business unit cost/accounting structures, including profit and loss statements. In addition, you may also take on some operations components such as resourcing, leases, vendor contracts negotiations and other relevant activities linked to the business operating smoothly.

You must have:

  • Professional accounting designation (CPA)
  • Five years of relevant accounting experience and 3 years of experience as a manager.
  • Post-secondary education, preferably in a relevant field
  • Strong track record of managing financial performance in a project-based environment.
  • Strong track record of mentoring and developing direct reports to the next level of performance.
  • Quickbooks expertise, both with accounting and payroll.
  • Project accounting knowledge with a strong understanding of the financial and project cost accounting practices and procedures necessary to effectively control project financial outcomes.
  • Ability to monitor financial performance and identify red flags.
  • Experience building and adapting defined systems, processes, and procedures within a company.
  • Highly organized with the ability to handle multiple projects/deadlines and multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Intermediate computer and digital literacy skills (Microsoft Windows / Apple OS, Microsoft Office, Internet/Web, Social Media).

Nice to have:

  • Experience with software organizations. Bonus points for expertise in fintech expertise, and in software companies that combine both professional services and product / SaaS.
  • Played a key role in expanding software companies both in Canada and US (multiple office locations, US expansion strategy - subsidiary vs. affiliate vs. associate etc.)


  • Manages all accounting and finance activities for the organization
  • Designs and maintains the accounting and finance related policies and programs
  • Processes all organizations accounting tasks, including invoicing, reconciliations, cheque processing, payroll, benefits, sick/vacation timekeeping, taxes, payroll deductions etc.
  • Drafts metrics, budgets, analytics, quarterly and annual statements
  • Analyzes and forecasts financial, costing and provides recommendations toward decision making
  • May support some operations needs as required
