Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer At Aecon Group

Location: Caledon, Ontario

Job Description

Aecon Materials Engineering is currently seeking an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer with a minimum of 7 years experience in geotechnical engineering to join our engineering team in Caledon, ON. Reporting to the Geotechnical Services Manager, the successful candidate will provide technical services to a variety of projects, including site investigation, analysis, shallow and deep foundation design, geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring, ground improvement, slope stability, construction supervision, as well as practical experience in the provision of geotechnical services on residential, industrial and commercial projects. The successful candidate will be a self-motivated individual with strong project management skills who can take initiative, handle challenges, prioritize multiple tasks, and provide superior service to internal and external clients. Key Responsibilities
  • Preparing proposals for geotechnical investigations and materials inspections and testing services;
  • Planning and overseeing geotechnical investigations from proposal phase to final submission for the geotechnical and foundation design report, including meetings and client correspondence;
  • Planning and overseeing geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring projects;
  • Directing field activities for instruments installation such as: inclinometers, surface monitoring points, pressure cells and strain gauges, multi points borehole extensometer(MPBX), monitoring wells and vibrating wire piezometers and data loggers;
  • Carrying out footing base inspections and trouble-shootings construction site issues;
  • Reviewing and interpreting monitoring information from geotechnical instrumentation programs;
  • Working with senior staff when dealing with difficult, complex and unusal matters and decisions;
  • Working independently with little supervision, depending on the complexity of the assignment;
  • Good working knowledge of AutoCAD systems and current geotechnical software applications such as Slope\W, Slide and gINT Software. Client contact and business development including delivery of technical findings and other project related communication;
  • Provides guidance and direction to other project engineers, junior engineers and technicians to ensure operational and project delivery excellence;
  • Conducts regular project reviews to ensure budget, schedule, risk, and cost to complete estimates are in order;
  • Continuing own technical skills development and propagation of those skills to others;
  • Works closely with the finance, quality, legal/risk, and project delivery shared services to advance project management tools such as project status reports, ensuring the design meets business line requirements and proper deployment and utilization within the business line;
  • Promotes collaboration within the AME and across Aecon to ensure effective resource sharing, workload/resource balancing and to bring the best the business has to offer to meet the needs of clients;
  • Responsible for managing and developing junior engineers and technicians in accordance with AME’s core values, the performance management program and the job architecture and job family structure, including supporting the identification and retention of and investment in top talent;
  • Visibly champions the Aecon’s programs of safety and ethics & compliance to ensure they are an overriding part of the organizational culture;
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge & Skills
  • University graduate with Civil Engineering degree specializing in Geotechnical or Geological engineering;
  • P. Eng designation is preferred;
  • Registered MTO RAQS would be an asset;
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience and a strong background in geotechnical engineering and field investigations;
  • Experience with complex geotechnical investigation and writing complete geotechnical foundation design reports;
  • Experience in geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring would be an asset;
  • Knowledge of environmental soil sampling , environmental testing and reporting would be an asset;
  • Excellent organizational ability, report writing and oral communication in English are essential;
  • Resourceful, decision maker, flexible and positive;
  • Client focused with business acumen;
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and have the ability to communicate effectively and to proactively respond to time-sensitive issues;
  • Excellent computer and technical writing skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced and multi-tasked environment are essential.
